Nasal Polyp / Nasal Polyp

The structures formed later in the nose and called polyps are an important problem that many people, by the way, give their doctors a headache Decently.

What is a Polyp?

There are many hollow organs in our body that can be filled with air.Mouth, nose, digestive system, external auditory canal are examples of these. There is a superficial layer of tissue that overlays these cavities. Here, structures such as meat that grow by hanging out of this tissue layer are called “polyps”.Such as ”ear, vocal cord, stomach, intestinal polyp". Polyps can also develop from damage to the tissues lining the inside of the nose or the cavities called “sinuses”, the mouths of which open into the nose.

Nasal polyps are soft, pale colored structures that hang down in the nose and are displaced by gravity.

What Causes Polyp?

The exact mechanism of polybine formation is not known, but damage to the tissue and its permanent state are the most likely cause.Chronic inflammation of the nose and sinuses, constant exposure of the nasal tissue to a stimulating substance, family reasons can cause polyps.Nasal polyps are also formed in some known diseases such as ”asthma“ and ”cystic fibrosis".

What Does the Polyp Cause?

Polyps can block nasal airflow, causing nasal congestion, hence mouth breathing, headache, snoring and sleep apnea, frequent throat sensitivity and inflammation, prolonged colds and flu, sinusitis and olfactory disorders, nasal discharge and asthma can increase.

How Is a Polyp Treated?

Polyps do not disappear on their own after they have formed. At the initial stage, or when they are very small, they can be reduced with medications, sometimes even eliminated, but when they become larger, they can only be cleaned with an operation.

Nasal polyp operation has shown significant changes in the light of technical developments in recent years.Operations that used to be performed inside the mouth, today can only be performed through the nose with “endoscopes” and “very thin instruments”.These modern operations are both more physiological and highly advantageous in terms of the recurrence rate of the disease. No incision is made from the outside of the nose.Berets, bruises, scars do not occur.

Before the operation, a computer tomographic examination of the intranasal and sinuses is required.

Do Polyps Recur?

We can divide our patients with nasal polyps into two.In the first group there are people who do not have a pronounced underlying disease.

The success rate of these people after functional endoscopic sinus surgery is 90%.But the success rate decreases in people with asthma, cystic fibrosis and aspirin allergies.Nasal polyps occur again in these people despite everything, what we can do nowadays in such patients is to delay the formation of polyps and their side effects as much as possible with surgery and drug treatment.
